What we do

Predator Free Ōpāwaho is a project of the Ōpāwaho Heathcote River Network to establish and maintain traplines on each bank of the river from the Tunnel Road bridge to Nga Puna Wai. Predator Free Ōpāwaho is part of the Predator Free NZ programme to remove mammalian predators from NZ.

Who are we?

Predator Free Ōpāwaho is a collection of residents who live close to the Ōpāwaho Heathcote River and who want to help bring back the birds by reducing the rat, mouse and hedgehog populations along the river corridor.  Predator Free Ōpāwaho owns and places the traps (within wooden tunnels) in appropriate positions along the riverbank following monitoring of the presence of rats and mice.  Volunteers service the traps and record events on the Trap.NZ app.

History

Predator Free Ōpāwaho was established in 2018 as a personal endeavour by Kay Robertson and Chris Bostock.  In 2025, the OHRN took over the administration of Predator Free Ōpāwaho and expanded its boundaries to cover all the river from Tunnel Road bridge to Nga Puna Wai.  CCC gave permission for OHRN to trap in public spaces on the proviso that it met certain conditions and was audited by CCC Community Partnership Rangers.
