Mt Vernon Park (Port Hills Trust)

Mtvernon

What we do

There is a small maintenance group that meets every Thursday to do minor general maintenance and there are normally a few larger working bees such as planting days every year.

Who are we?

Mount Vernon Park is owned and administered by the Port Hills Park Trust Board to conserve and enhance the natural environment and provide opportunity for public recreation. Port Hills Park Trust is the organisation that administers Mt Vernon Park on behalf of the people of Christchurch.

The park covers 235 hectares of the Christchurch Port Hills. It is bounded by the on the east by the popular Rāpaki Track and on the west by Huntsbury Spur. It rises from the city urban edge right to the 462m high summit of Mt Vernon.

History

The Park was purchased for the people of Canterbury in 1985 and is managed by volunteers for conservation and low impact recreation including walking, mountain biking, climbing, bird watching, geocaching and photography.
